Everything aches.

I’ve never felt weaker.

As my vision clears, I observe my surroundings and realize I’m in the hospital.

Momma’s sitting at my side, head low as if napping. I look past her to Dawn and Moniece on the small couch, speaking in hushed voices.

“Trish.” Dawn shoots to her feet.

“Baby?” Momma leans forward and grasps my hand. “How are you feeling? You need the doctor?”

It hurts to speak, but I still force out, “Where’s Alexander?”

Instantly, Momma’s face hardens. “You better forget about that man.”

“Trisha.” Moniece sniffles and dabs at her eyes. “Look what’s happened to you. When will it be enough?”

“Hun, please let go of Alexander Westerfield,” Dawn insists in a serious tone. “You could have died tonight.”

I blink away from their sad expressions and stare at the door, hoping he’ll enter at any moment.

Where is he? I bet they chased him off.

“It’s not Alexander’s fault,” I try to defend.

“Like hell it isn’t,” Momma scolds. “You listen to me, Trisha Hartman. End it. Don’t even so much as speak his name.”

“Momma, I—”

“I don’t want to hear it!” she snaps, brown eyes stretched wide. “You almost took a bullet for him, your apartment got ransacked, you were locked in a basement, and now stabbed. Why in God’s name are you risking your life for some man? Have you lost your damn mind?”

Furious, I flick to my friends. “What the hell? You told her everything?”

Dawn sucks her teeth. “It was the only way to knock some sense into your ass.”

“I can’t believe you brought him into my home,” Momma adds harshly. “Your daddy would have been so upset with you. That man and his family have heat on them. I won’t bury my only child.”

The pain builds.

I press my eyes shut and breathe deeply. “I need a nurse. It hurts.”

Momma clucks her tongue when I open my eyes again. “It should be a reminder of what involving yourself with that man nearly cost you.”

“Please…” My voice cracks, and the tears spill down the sides of my face.

“I’ll get the nurse,” Moniece says, hurrying from the room.

“You’re coming home with me when they release you.” Raising her index finger, she adds in a firmer tone, “Don’t even think about contacting him.”

I don’t argue because I know it’s useless.

None of them will budge.

All that’s left is to wait until Alexander comes to see me. I know he will.
